When I first stepped into this commercial lobby in Folsom, CA, I was underwhelmed—beige on beige on beige. Flat. Lifeless. Where was the inspiration?
I closed my eyes and let the space speak through feeling rather than thought. This building sits along the American River, within a riparian corridor rich with valley oaks, wildlife, and salmon habitats—an ecosystem shaped by Folsom Dam and the 31-mile “Wild and Scenic” stretch of river.
Then I looked up and imagined: what if the skylight shattered, and leaves from the surrounding trees came cascading down into the lobby?
That vision became the work. The skylight’s structure is echoed in the composition, while imagined falling leaves drift through shifting light—rendered in vivid color, gold, and silver leaf across wood panels.
